Sergio Fantini is professor of biomedical engineering at Tufts University, which he joined in 1999 after his studies in physics at the University of Florence, Italy, and his postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches courses on medical imaging and statistical methods of data analysis, and he performs research in biomedical optics to develop non-invasive techniques for the study of biological tissues. His laboratory on diffuse optical imaging of tissue, the DOIT Lab at Tufts University, works on applications such as functional brain imaging, tissue oximetry, optical mammography, and the assessment of cerebral perfusion in the healthy and injured brain. He is an inventor on eleven patents and has co-authored about 200 scientific publications. He is passionate about soccer (forza Viola!), classical music (the sonata form and the fugue are powerful examples of structured creativity), opera (Falstaff etc.), and tennis.
