As a second-generation Alaskan, award-winning author Russell M. Chace was steeped in the tradition and lore of the ‘Last Frontier’. Raised in a mixture of Athabascan, Yupik, and white cultures, he grew to appreciate and admire their cultures and knowledge. He learned how to pan gold on the banks of the Chatanika River from an old prospector. He spent most of his young adult life feeding his family home-grown vegetables, wild game, and fish. Much of it preserved in the old ways. He still keeps a sourdough starter active, handed down from his mother, that she fed the family on, since the 1960s. Like his ancestors, he spent most of his young adult life wandering the ridges and valleys of the interior of Alaska, many of which appear in his books. Russell M. Chace is the author of The Adventures of Dalton Laird series, which includes From Out of the Loneliness, Under the Midnight Sun, and The Sun Dogs of Winter.
