David McGuire is the founder and director of the Ocean Health and Shark Conservation non-profit Shark Stewards dedicated to saving sharks and protecting critical marine habitat. He is an adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco in Environmental Science and a National Geographic Explorer producing media with an emphasis on shark conservation and ocean awareness. A Research Associate of the Department of Aquatic Biology at the California Academy of Sciences, David conducts a shark research program in SE Asia that includes population studies, movements and fisheries impacts. Since 2006 Shark Stewards has worked establishing shark fin regulations in 13 US states and currently is supporting a US law to eliminate the trade of shark fins in the United States. A major program focus is creating marine protected areas from California to Southeast Asia and supporting our National Marine Sanctuaries and Marine Monuments through education and policy. As a documentary filmmaker, David has produced several award winning documentaries on shark and has been involved with the International Ocean Film Festival San Francisco since 2007. He is currently working on an ocean awareness film series in China and has a new book on sharks and sanctuaries being published this year.
