Stephen Burd is a senior writer and editor with the Education Policy program at New America, a public policy institute in Washington, DC, where he has helped shape the organization’s work on higher education policy and student aid issues. Burd has received multiple national reporting awards for his coverage of federal higher education policy and his investigative work on the student loan and for-profit college industries. Before coming to New America in 2007, Burd worked for 15 years as a journalist at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He also served as a senior policy analyst at Ed Sector. In addition to the Chronicle, his writings have appeared in Inside Higher Ed, The Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, the Washington Monthly, and the Hechinger Report. A 2017 documentary, Fail State, chronicled Burd’s work uncovering abuses at for-profit colleges and exposing the for-profit higher education’s influence-peddling on Capitol Hill.
