Timothy Sellnow, Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Communication at Clemson University. Dr. Sellnow’s research focuses on strategic communication in risk and crisis contexts such as bioterrorism, food safety, pre-crisis planning, and communication strategies for risk management and mitigation in organizational and health settings. He has conducted funded research for the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Geological Survey, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Science Foundation. He has also served in an advisory role for the National Academy of Sciences, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He is a past winner of the National Communication Association’s Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship. He is also past editor of the National Communication Association’s Journal of Applied Communication Research. He has published numerous refereed journal articles on risk and crisis communication and has co-authored seven books on risk and crisis communication. Dr. Sellnow’s most recent book, co-authored with Dr. Deanna Sellnow, is Before Crisis: The Practice of Effective Risk Communication.
