Hamish Williams (PhD in Classical Literature, University of Cape Town) is a guest researcher in European Literature and Culture at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. His main area of expertise is Classical Reception Studies, particularly post-classical afterlives in modern literature and popular genres, but he is broadly interested in modern literary studies, covering topics such as utopianism, decline, hospitality, and the sublime. His publications include Tolkien and the Classical World (ed.) (Walking Tree Publishers, 2021); The Ancient Sea: The Utopian and Catastrophic in Classical Narratives and their Reception (ed.) (Liverpool University Press, 2022); and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Utopianism and the Classics (Bloomsbury, 2023). His current project focuses on modern receptions of Minoan Crete. Outside of academic writing, Hamish tries keeping up with his polyglot family and dabbles in creative writing: The Southern Tide (Ranger, 2021).
