An American mathematician’s assignment in Russia spirals into a high-stakes maze of shifting loyalties and intrigue in a propulsive short thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child.

Nathan Tyler is an unassuming professor at a middling American university with a rather obscure specialty in mathematics—in short, a nobody from nowhere. So why is the White House calling? Summoned to Washington, DC, for a top-secret briefing, Nathan discovers that he’s the key to a massive foreign intelligence breakthrough. Reading between the lines of a cryptic series of equations, he could open a door straight into the heart of the Kremlin and change the global balance of power forever. All he has to do is get to a meeting with the renowned Russian mathematician who created it. But when Nathan crashes headlong into a dangerous new game, the odds against him suddenly look a lot steeper.

This short story is an Amazon original, and i absolutely loved it. It's surprising, with several twists and turns i didn't see coming, which for me always make the best books! If I can see it a mile away, it's not as good as when I'm floored, and this one will leave you floored. This book brings into question a lot of things: what will you do for your country, and what will your country do for you, just for starters. It also makes you think about loyalty--who, what, why, where, when all come to mind, safety, honor, and a lot of things we just all take for granted. It's centered around math and math as a security "agent," but you don't even have to like math to love the book. I'm not as fond of math as I am the security aspect of it, which i enjoyed in the story, but it just goes so much deeper than that! Well-written, fast-paced, and psychologically wicked!! Absolutely a must-read. I'll for sure read it again.

I normally don't go after short stories, but I am happy I chose this one. The fact that it was about Math intrigued me. And I was not disappointed. It is an interesting story involving politics & a little math! The writing is crisp and the math part is not that difficult to grasp. Overall an enjoyable read.

I admit that I would have loved to have read a full length novel of this. The story (despite it being short) held such promise. Somewhat disappointed that it ended so shortly without a lot of context, but then again a good mystery such of this often has no ending and leaves you hanging. This short story certainly fullfilled that.

Short but sweet national security novel. Only 4 stars because the book started out strong in the details and buildup, but the second half fell a little short in believability and lacked the finer details found in the beginning. However it was a good read that was short and quick.

One of the best short stories I’ve ever read! Very well crafty and executed! The author included enough character development and scene descriptions for the reader to be fully engaged and managed a couple plot twists to keep us wondering how things would work out. The ending was not expected but it was satisfying.
Many short stories often fail in character development, scene development and usually do not have much room for plot twists when the author is trying to keep the story 'short'. This well-crafty (dare I say "mystery") story proves that the short story genre can avoid those usual failings. Kudos to Mr. Child! Very well done!
I suggest this should be required reading for all history and political science students and for anyone considering a federal job, especially foreign affairs. Makes you think!

How very delightful. What starts as a highly dangerous assignment is eventually revealed to have been a flat-out ridiculous assignment. And the moment when our hero quietly flicks an internal switch, stops being compliant, and takes matters into his own hands is brilliant. I am perplexed by the reviewers who worry that readers won't understand the math. There is NO complex math in this story; there is only the masterful implication of complex math, to which we are never actually subjected. If you've ever tried to remember a password too many times and been locked out of a site, you'll get it. I suppose the tiny bit of music terminology might go over some heads, but you can read right past it.

A short story about a new character, a mathematician with Reacher potential. Very enjoyable reading. I hope Lee will bring this character back in a new novel series.

A really fun, quick read. The story is sharp, clever, and keeps you hooked right until the end. It’s not a typical action-packed thriller like the Jack Reacher books, but it’s still classic Lee Child in how it grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.

The whole plot revolves around the titular “eleven numbers,” and while I won’t spoil what they are, they’re central to the mystery. The story is short and fast-paced, with just the right amount of suspense to keep you guessing. Even in such a small space, Child manages to create characters that feel real and a plot that’s unpredictable but satisfying.

What I loved most is how it makes you think about chance and how small decisions can lead to big consequences. It’s a bit more subtle than the usual shootouts and brawls you might expect from Child, but it’s refreshing in a way.

If you’re a fan of Lee Child or just looking for something quick and engaging to read, I’d definitely recommend this one. It’s proof that a short story can pack just as much punch.

It can be hard writing a short 50 page story ensuring it's sufficiently complete for the reader. Lee Child achieves it in this thriller.

The story is effectively a series of short scenes that all drive the story forward. Maths Professor Nathan Tyler surprisingly gets the invitation of a lifetime to help his country. Little does he know how strange and dangerous it will become and not just from the foreign country he has agreed to visit to attend a mathematics conference.

The story keeps you guessing, Child makes you feel like a part of the story, and has a clever ending.

A fun thrilling 40 minute read.

Got this on early reads. Enjoyed the short story, only 45 pages on Kindle. It's the first Lee Child book I've read (I know I'm behind!) but I thought the style was good, easy and pleasant to read.
