KDP Author Central Bio: Before writing, Marine Biology Lite, Barbara Carr Whitman spent a lifetime exploring, working, and teaching in, on, and under the sea, learning as much as possible about the marine environment - but on her own terms. After graduate school, Whitman, unwilling to be confined by the usual expectations and constraints typically encountered at traditional jobs within research facilities, government organizations, and academic institutions, took the road less travelled. She became an entrepreneur. She asked herself, “What do I want to do and how can I make it happen?” Her job description: To explore and learn, then translate complex concepts into exciting hands-on experiences and interdisciplinary learning for people of all ages and backgrounds. Although Whitman’s specialties are marine animal adaptation and behavior, and marine ecology, she has a well-rounded portfolio of experience in the marine environment and is a perpetual course-taker and adventurer. She's lived and worked as a marine biologist and educator in New England, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, Midway Atoll, and Florida. Whitman’s knowledge and experience expanded dramatically with each move. Eventually she began to see the marine environment holistically and started to understand how everything intertwined. Along the way, Whitman’s work has garnered attention. • Her work has been profiled in several national and international magazines and newspapers and on television in the U.S. and abroad. • She has won numerous state, national, and global awards and nominations as an informal educator and sustainable tourism operator. • She discovered a new invasive crab species (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) in Connecticut. • She is a published writer, environmental consultant, and scientist (Acclimating Captive Hawksbills to the Sea Prior to Release). • Her favorite award is “Animal Hero”. Whitman’s focus has now shifted to sharing all her knowledge with a wider audience. A published writer throughout her career, she has turned her efforts to a series of books on marine biology called "Marine Biology Lite". She once again breaks all the conventions of science writing, coming up with an innovative approach to teaching her beloved subject. In 'Marine Biology Lite: Volume One', Whitman’s naturally relaxed writing style seamlessly merges scientific facts with personal anecdotes - some humorous, others moving - giving readers insights into the oceanic environment and offering them a glimpse into life as a marine biologist. Whitman’s books do more than just share knowledge - they ignite curiosity and foster an appreciation for the immense biodiversity of our oceans, highlighting their current fragility.
