Hello! Professionally, I am a surveyor specializing in mapping the Earth on land and at sea. It's been a rewarding and exciting career that's taken me around the world working in some very interesting, and occasionally hostile, environments. It has also been a job that's rewarded me with many friendships across the globe (an opportunities for cheap holidays!) I started serious writing in 1994 or thereabouts, researching the origins of the famous Mason Dixon Line in America. The book first came out in 2000 and a new edition, fully revised and updated appeared in 2016. The second edition was the result of the huge amount of research and new discoveries spurred by the interest in the first edition. My second 'narrative history', Weighing the World was the consequence of the success of Drawing the Line and sets out the extraordinary 500 year story of the development of modern Earth measuring. From the outset, I was at pains to introduce each new development in the context of the times and to interweave contemporary events and anecdotes including the originator of Shelly's Frankenstein story which, surprisingly, was due to the experiments of a noted geodecist. Now I have hung up my desert boots, I have time to develop my writing. Already I have a fascinating Egyptian history in its final stages and which, I confess, has been a fascinating journey full of surprises (and lots of bloodshed). More recently, I have completed my first novel, a somewhat satirical story of local authority corruption, insane murder and general mayhem when a local council employee (a statistics clerk, of all things) is given the job of building a contentious by-pass. I am currently in the throes of completing a three part political satire that takes the consequences of Brexit to its uttermost extremes. Curiously, I started the trilogy during my sojourn in Singapore in 2013-14, long before Brexit was a gleam in Cameron's jaundiced eye. It is scary how so much of the craziness and insanity I dreamed up has actually come to pass! All I need now is a brave and adventurous publisher! Other work on the stocks includes a 'defense' of the spherical Earth; this came about after a long and tortured correspondence with a Flat Earth fanatic. I enjoy discussing my work with just about anyone and frequent give talks and presentations on my fascinating career and the joys of being a research historian and writer.
