Jay Holben is an award-winning independent director and producer living in Los Angeles, California. He was a former cinematographer with more than a decade experience behind the camera and is an associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers and co-chair of the ASC’s Motion Imaging Technology Council. He is the author of four books on cinematography: the highly lauded, A Shot in the Dark: A Creative DIY Guide to Digital Video Lighting on (Almost) No Budget; a compilation of a decade of cinematographic journalism in Behind the Lens: Dispatches from the Cinematographic Trenches; the exhaustive The Cine Lens Manual: The Definitive Filmmaker’s Guide to the Design, Implementation and History of Cinema Optics and, most recently, American Cinematographer’s Shot Craft: Lessons, Tips & Techniques on the Art and Science of Cinematography. He is currently the contributing technical editor for American Cinematographer Magazine with nearly a three-decade tenure with the publication. He is also the former technical editor and columnist for Digital Video magazine and lighting columnist for TV Technology magazine in addition to contributing for several years to the The Hollywood Reporter.
