The connection I've had to nature has had a strong influence on where and how I live. I grow most of the food I eat, and produce most of the energy I use, carbon free. I built my own home out of trees from the land. That is the subject of my most recent book, "Building My Dream: A Log Cabin and a Life". It has always been important to me to live in the physical world. To use my hands to create and nourish myself, and the world I live in. I have great respect for those who create with their hands, and I dedicated the book to them all. I've enjoyed writing my whole life, but until recently, it was usually computer code: c, java, html, fortran. My first book is "All You Have to Do Is Walk", about the four and a half months I spent hiking the Appalachian Trail. It explores the bliss long distance hikers feel. Computers don't feel, at least not yet. So when I was a software engineer, I never had to deal with such things as "bliss". How do you describe bliss? That's quite a challenge for a software engineer. Yet doing that had become a preoccupation for me. How could I describe how intense it was? Who would understand? Who would believe it? But I tried. I've been fortunate to live a long life, filled with so many experiences. I am working on a new book which tells the story of my professional life, of a software engineer, from the dawn of the digital age. Follow me to learn when it becomes available.
