I was born and have always lived in Mexico City, where I learned to speak Spanish and English at the same time. My husband and I have two sons and, since the boys are on their own, we now share our home with Sabrina, a Welsh corgi. I write in both languages and have stories and over 60 books for kids published in Mexico, the US, Austria, Germany, Colombia, UK, and Brazil. Seven of my books were selected for the Mexican government’s reading program and six are shortlisted by the Fundación Cuatrogatos (www.cuatrogatos.org) in their yearly roster of 100 recommended books in Spanish. Most of my books have to do with Mexico, its people, and traditions, like Las almas de la fiesta y otros cuentos de Día de Muertos, illustrated by Israel Barrón (Ediciones Castillo), Cuentos mayas, illustrated by Ángel Campos (Edelvives México), and Whiskers, Tails and Wings-Animal Folktales from Mexico, illustrated by Fabricio VandenBroeck (Charlesbridge), book that received a starred review from Kirkus. My newest books are Let’s Eat Bugs!, with photos by my son Ilan Rabchinskey (Reycraft Books), Un elefante se balanceaba, illustrations by Carolina Monterrubio (Océano Travesía); and Mercado–– the Heart of the Barrio, with photos by Ilan Rabchinskey (Reycraft Books). My book, ¡Al rescate!, won the III Certamen Internacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil FOEM 2018 of the State of Mexico, one of the country’s most prestigious prizes in children’s literature. The book was published in 2020 with illustrations by Irma Bastida. As you can tell, Mexico and its people and traditions provide me with a never-ending, fascinating supply of subjects and themes.
