Tarleton Gillespie is a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, and an associate professor at Cornell University in the Department of Communication and the Department of Information Science. His current work examines the sociological implications of online media platforms, particularly their use policies and their algorithmic logics, and how they shape the contours of public expression and knowledge. He is the author of Custodians of the Internet: Platforms, Content Moderation, and the Hidden Decisions that Shape Social Media (Yale Univ Press, 2018), the co-editor of Media Technologies: Essays on Communication, Materiality, and Society (MIT Press, 2014) and the author of Wired Shut: Copyright and the Shape of Digital Culture (MIT Press, 2007).
