Henri Colt is a physician-writer and adventure traveler who authors medical textbooks and works of fiction and nonfiction. He is an Emeritus Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California and an international scholar. Dr. Colt is also an award-winning medical educator, ethicist, Pushcart Prize-nominated author, and philosophical practitioner. He lectures about medical education, ethics, art, film, and philosophy on six continents. More than thirty years of experience caring for critically or terminally ill patients fuels Professor Colt’s writing about human relationships and emotions. His collection of Flash Fiction, 30 Stories about Life & Death, was published in 2022. In his book, Becoming Modigliani, Henri uses a medical through-line to study the art, life, and social context of Jewish-Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, who died of tuberculous meningitis in early 20th century Paris at the age of thirty-five. The book is the first in a series of nonfiction works about visual artists who died young from diseases representative of their times. Colt's medical writing stems from his uniquely global perspective on clinical practice and healthcare education in diverse cultural environments. He has personally conducted numerous faculty development programs in more than thirty countries. His Essential Bronchoscopist© series of training manuals are published in eighteen languages, and his best-selling textbook, Bronchoscopy and Central Airways Disorders: A Patient-Centered Approach (Elsevier Press), is a major resource for medical professionals around the world. The popular Picture of Health: Medical Ethics and the Movies (Oxford University Press) is used by ethicists, filmmakers, educators, and serious readers who want to learn how feature films can be used to illustrate ethical issues. As a former leader of international medical associations and the founder of Bronchoscopy International, Henri has a long history of humanitarian aid work, with current projects in Nepal, Latin America, and North Africa. His recent medical writings include “AI in Respirology and Bronchoscopy” by Deasy, Colt, & Kennedy (From, AI in Clinical Medicine, Wiley, 2023), “Artificial intelligence and computational modeling” by Khemasuwan & Colt, (From, 3D Lung Models for Regenerating Lung Tissue, Elsevier, 2023), and “Bronchoscopy Education-New Insights” by Colt, (From, Interventions in Pulmonary Medicine, Elsevier, 2023). When he is not teaching or climbing mountains, Henri divides his time between Laguna Beach, California and Southern France.
