I am a folklorist by training but my research and writing engages with developments in several related but distinct disciplines: folklore, anthropology, performance studies, theatre history, material culture studies, children's literature, and fairy-tale studies. My tastes have always run to the odd, campy, and offbeat -- and in recent years my longstanding interests in fairy-tale history, costume, cross-dressing, dance and musical theatre have all found a happy home in my work on British pantomime. An award-winning professor and author, I love introducing readers and university students alike to fresh perspectives on familiar material, as well as sparking interest in stories and performance forms that have been neglected for far too long.
