Professor Gerard Magill Biosketch. Professor Gerard Magill, PhD, was appointed as the The Vernon F. Gallagher Chair for the Integration of Science, Theology, Philosophy, and Law at Duquesne University in summer 2007. He is a tenured Professor in the University's Center for Healthcare Ethics where he mentors students in its Master's and Doctoral programs in healthcare ethics. Between 1996-2006, Dr. Magill was Executive Director, Department Chair, and a tenured Professor in the Center for Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University. During that time he also held faculty appointments as Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine in the School of Medicine and as Professor of Health Administration in the School of Public Health. Also, he was a Division Director in the Department of Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University Hospital and a member of the Faculty Executive Committee for the Center for Business Ethics in the School of Business and Administration at Saint Louis University. He served on the University's Institutional Review Board for the health sciences and the Hospital Ethics Committee. In 1996 he opened the first academic department in healthcare ethics with a PhD degree program in the US, a model that other Universities have adopted. Between 1976-1996, Dr. Magill held academic appointments in ethics at: Drygrange College, Melrose, Scotland; at Loyola University, Chicago, IL; and at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, MO. Research and Publications. Dr. Magill has published 7 edited, co-edited, or co-authored books, and he recently completed a book manuscript on Imagination and Ethics. Currently, he is writing with a co-author a book on Governance Ethics regarding boards of directors in healthcare. He has published over 60 scholarly and professional articles, he has given over 200 professional presentations. He was the editor of a bioethics journal, and he is an active member of 13 Professional Associations. He has extensive experience on Institutional Review Boards and Hospital Ethics Committees. He was the lead author of a national report commissioned by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) on hospital ethics committees (2004). His current research includes: Governance Ethics and Organizational Ethics in Healthcare; Stem Cell Research; Human Genomics; Hospital Ethics Committees; Research Ethics, Human Subjects Protection, and Institutional Review Boards; Patient Safety; and Religious Healthcare Ethics.
