Charmaine Troy Ph.D. is the Associate Director of First-Generation Student Initiatives & Academic Professional at Georgia Tech. In this role, she is focused on the access, equity, and success of first-generation students. She leads the university’s work in supporting the co-curricular success of first-generation college students and overseeing the planning, development and implementation of programming for first-generation students. Dr. Troy joined Georgia Tech from Virginia Tech, where she served as the Assistant Dean for First-Generation Student Success. She has successfully launched three first-generation student programs at three institutions. Dr. Troy was selected by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Embassy to participate in the United Civic Alliance Network International Exchange Program between Armenia and Turkey to promote grassroots civic engagement in education. She served as a board member for the Montgomery County, VA Economic Development Authority. She previously served as an advisory board member on the Gwinnett County Public Schools Community-Based Mentoring Program; Vice Chairman of the Wake County Housing Authority Commission; and as a Director on the Wake County Housing Finance Corporation. She is co-editor of the book Developing and Implementing Promising Practices and Programs for First-Generation Students. She is also co-editor of the book Graduate Education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): A Student Perspective and co-author of the book chapter “Mentoring Experiences of Graduate Students in HBCU Professional Programs.” Dr. Troy is the recipient of the Bertha Pitts Campbell Special Scholarship in Education and the Delta Research and Educational Foundation Golden Anniversary Scholarship from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She also received the Educational and Charitable Foundation Graduate Fellowship for Graduate Studies from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is a current member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, and The Links, Incorporated. Dr. Troy earned a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master in Public Administration from North Carolina Central University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Higher Education from Morgan State University.
