INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Heart-wrenchingly personal…dizzying.” —Rolling Stone

From eldest daughter Shari Franke, the shocking true story behind the viral 8 Passengers family vlog and the hidden abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, and how, in the face of unimaginable pain, she found freedom and healing.

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel
8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

As the family’s YouTube notoriety grew, so too did Ruby’s delusions of righteousness. Fueled by the sadistic influence of relationship coach Jodi Hildebrandt, together they implemented an inhumane and merciless disciplinary regime.

Ruby and Jodi were arrested in Utah in 2023 on multiple charges of aggravated child abuse. On that fateful day, Shari shared a photo online of a police car outside their home. Her caption had one word: “Finally.”

For the first time, Shari will reveal the disturbing truth behind
8 Passengers and her family’s devastating involvement with Jodi Hildebrandt’s cultish life coaching program, “ConneXions.” No stone is left unturned as Shari exposes the perils of influencer culture and shares for the first time her battle for truth and survival in the face of her mother’s cruelty.

Quality Read!!
I never watched 8 passengers. I never heard of Ruby Franke until the story popped up on my true crime radar. …well PART of the story, that is. We knew what was seen on body cam, interviews, and police statements. But NO ONE knew the depth of what happened.. what was happening in front of so many people, yet behind closed doors. Media jumped to get every Franke headline out there that they could. But no one cared enough to let those involved choose what could make it out there in the public. No one was delicate in asking questions or trying to put themselves in the survivors shoes. So many demanded answers and wouldn’t let them have quiet or privacy. So many people made documentaries, headlines, and gossip without the family’s approval. I believe this book is the best and perhaps only way that Shari, a survivor, could truly speak the truth of what happened. The only way to satisfy innocent curiosity and vicious invaders of privacy, alike.I pre-ordered the book, despite having not read a hard copy book for a couple of years, perhaps. Even as a busy mother, who took hours away from reading, to play with my child and have dinner with my family, I finished the book in 24 hours after receiving it in the mail.Upon opening the book, I was immediately captured by the writing style, the skill, the verbiage. You feel you get to walk in Shari’s shoes. You see the helplessness, the striving for perfection, constantly being put down, and yet perseverance to save her family and discover how she can help herself. This book works through things chronologically, and although there’s so much I’m sure she had to edit out, it feels complete. It starts back when Ruby and Kevin was born, a brief insight of how they grew up, and the whirlwind of their meeting to marriage. One of the things that impressed me about Shari’s writing is that she managed to bring every different perspective and feeling out in a way that shows the complexity of the dynamic. The fact that she talked about how stunning Ruby was on her wedding day and the vision that she was, how Shari wanted to be her moms friend, how she felt used by her mom, the anger towards Ruby, the compassion she sometimes felt towards her, the fear for her safety, while also wanting her far away. Shari really wrote in each emotion she felt at the time. Before reading, I thought maybe the book would focus fully on how bad her mom is. But really the whole picture is SO much bigger than that. Shari was so genuine and she didn’t just focus on being a victim. Instead you could see her growth, struggle, growth, perseverance , growth throughout the pages.I am a Christian, not LDS, but I wanted to briefly comment that she spoke highly and respectfully of the LDS church. As the Franke family was in the LDS community, I thought some might be concerned this would portray them in a bad light. Instead there is more focus on when Ruby dramatically changes in the conneXions cult as Jodi’s obsessive partner (in more ways that it had appeared from the surface.) And as far as the LDS church goes, it seems Shari is still a part of it, and now realizes more than ever (especially with a couple not-so-good circumstances in the church hierarchy) that God’s word is more important than the way man tries to (sometimes badly) interpret it. She seems to be in a healthy place spiritually, mentally, and physically, with a lot of self awareness and understanding that growing and healing is ongoing.I have included a few pages, sections that jumped out to me, some of which answered questions I had before reading. Just a sneak peak, because you have to buy and read this to truly get the whole picture! To Shari, Chad, and the other children (I am happy have remained anonymous in Shari’s book:)In case you ever see this.. I don’t know you, and you don’t know me, but if we knew each other in real life, I’d like to think we would be friends. We could eat mini corn dogs and watch a show together. But the truth is, you don’t need every person who got a glimpse into your life to be your friend. Because you will slowly grow in (or heal) the relationships with the family/friends you have, and with the loved ones you meet. You will slowly put the pieces (only the ones you choose) together to create your community, family, and life. You deserve for everyone to forget about you, and I mean this in the best way. You deserve the peace that isn’t found in the online chatter. You deserve to find true, unfettered happiness. You all will grow and overcome so much as you continue on. Allow this propel you forward into great things. You no-longer have to live in fear. The Bible says to be of good cheer for Jesus has overcome the world. I know so many chains have been broken, thanks to you guys. You are a generation of change. Your children will be so blessed to have you - when and if that day comes. (And there is so much life to live before then!) Shari’s curiosity, planning ahead, and love for learning; Chad’s carefree spirit; and each and every one of your best traits will be passed on. When the day comes, it is truly SO healing to LOVE, cherish, and treat your children they way you wanted your childhood to be. You get to see the world through their eyes! Your children’s childhood won’t just be theirs. It’ll be yours too. Sending all my love and well wishes! Xoxo

Shari does a phenomenal job of relaying the story of her life. She details the abuse and neglect she experienced, but is very intentional about her protection of the minor children's rights to privacy. I appreciated how much she limited stories involving them. Her unwavering defense of their right to their own story is commendable. I had been curious how her Faith has been impacted by her experiences, and felt she did a beautiful job of describing her spiritual journey and relationship with God.
For those familiar with the 8 passengers, Shari's brilliance and way with words shouldn't be surprising. I knew as soon as it was announced that this book would be well written, but I never could have expected what a truly remarkable job she did with it. From the moment I picked this book up I couldn't set it down for a moment. My favorite part was the acknowledgements, I was cheering at each familiar name. I am glad she has the freedom to now live her life away from the cameras. Wishing her nothing but joy, continued strength, and happiness wherever life takes her.

I recently finished reading "House of My Mother" in just one day, and it left a lasting impression on me. As a fan of biographies and true stories, I was deeply touched by Shari's writing. She captured the beauty and pain of the experiences, especially the abuse, with such grace and empathy. Her perspective brought the story to life in a way that was both heart-wrenching and inspiring. I highly recommend this book to anyone who values honest and powerful storytelling.

I followed the 8 passengers channel for a few years, about 5-6 years ago. I stopped watching once I began feeling so uncomfortable with how Shari and her siblings were being treated. There were times were I thought, “Oh, this is just for clickbait, it’s part of the ‘drama’, that’s showbiz”, but now I know that wasn’t the case. I stopped watching all together because every video left me feeling like I shouldn’t have seen that. I unfollowed 8 passengers, but I continued to follow Shari. I knew that one day she’d become successful and wanted to be able to support and see her through that.

Fast forward to now, I am incredibly impressed by the student, advocate, sister, and daughter she is. Her journey is heartbreaking and tragic, I won’t sugar coat that. As a 27 year old mom, daughter, sister, and friend, my heart was ripped out and just wanted to love her. However, through it all, she kept her faith and she has handled all of this with complete grace and wrote one of the most compelling memoirs I’ve ever read.

I end this book feeling proud of Shari, inspired by her will to press on through her darkest days, and honored that she chose to share HER story HER way. Well done!

Setting aside the horrors of 8 Passengers for a moment, this book was incredibly well written, immediately immersive, and led to quite a bit of self-examination. Shari’s willingness to share the gritty details of her intense therapy work was inspiring and motivating, a gentle nudge that tells us we can all — always — be better versions of ourselves with hard work and uncomfortable truths. Shari’s journey is a testament to the power of introspection, defiance in the face of injustice, and a reminder that no trauma is “too big” to heal from. Thank you for that, Shari, and for your courage to question authority and seek truth even (and especially) when faced with pushback.

As for the 8 Passengers story that was and is so vital to who Shari is — Shari has successfully taken back control of the narrative of her life. I particularly appreciate her protection of her siblings.

Her literary background and years of journaling are apparent in her prose, which still reflects so much of who Shari is — once a relatable teenager, often very witty, so deeply compassionate and empathetic, and most importantly, uncensored. This is Shari’s story, from start to finish, and it’s well worth the read.

Well-written and thoughtful with an undercurrent of humor and a lot of compassion. Her observations help the reader understand narcissistic behaviors and trauma coping mechanisms like fawning, and how they manifested in her life (and how/why they can manifest in yours). Whether or not you followed her Mom's Vlog or the drama that unfolded when her siblings were found in dangerous conditions, this book is engaging and enjoyable to read despite the gravity of the subject matter.

I have followed 8 passengers for many years, and like most of the public I could see the narcissism that Ruby embodied. Shari does a phenomenal job portraying this and generational trauma as a whole.

Enthralling and eye opening page turner that I couldn’t put down.

Proud of Shari and everything she has over come & continues to overcome. Proud of her for stepping up and stepping out to protect herself, siblings, and others who experience exploitation and emotional abuse.

This book is so excellently written. Shari is such a gifted writer, and she’s very gifted in her ability to learn about herself and others, and share in such an elegant, well-articulated, and relatable way - most incredibly, after such a horrific upbringing.

I didn’t have many expectations for this, but am very supportive of Shari and was curious to read her story — but this was powerful, careful, emotionally vulnerable, and well crafted. It was a privilege to read.

I especially appreciated where Shari went a bit above her family’s own story to theorize about the connections between vlogging and the LDS church and the isolation that the church creates, making it a vulnerable community for cult leaders like Jodi, searching for prey. In the same way, it makes the children of these vlogger families especially vulnerable. Drawing these connections is so important and has not been done before, and it lays the groundwork for Shari’s larger advocacy goals - I was so thrilled to see this come out of the memoir. Learning her story is one (important!) thing, but taking real fundamental lessons that can be taken into the world is huge - this is well worth reading and considering.

The book was in great condition and new as expected.

SPOILER ALERT!!! This is my review of the book and it could contain spoilers.

8 passengers was a youtube channel I watched around 2018 to 2020 or thereabout. Little did I know what was going on behind the smiles for the camera and seemingly lovely family moments.

Shari Franke does a great job depicting what her life was like before youtube and how what we saw on youtube was a facade. She describes what Ruby was like in front of the camera and away from the camera.

Shari and her siblings grew up in a very abusive household even prior to Jodi Hildebrant's counselling. After Jodi got involved things went from bad to worse until one day in August 2023 a brave little boy went to a neighbours house. This inadvertently lead to the rescue of his siblings and the arrest or Ruby and Jodi. I say inadvertently because he apparently wanted to go to the police station because he felt he did something wrong. Shari also suffered abuse at the hands of a man high up in the LDS church.

The way this book is written is brilliant. Shari is such a strong woman for all she has been through. She is the glue that held the family together even when her family was turning against her. She was the proactive and protective parent to her siblings when her parents couldn't or wouldn't be. She is a beautiful example of a woman and a great pillar of strength.

    Shari you are an inspiration
