"One of the ten most influential living martial artists in the world" - 2006 Black Belt Magazine Stephen K. Hayes was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1949, and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He has traveled throughout North America, Japan, Europe, the Arctic, China, Tibet, Nepal, and India in the pursuit of perfection through the study of the Asian martial arts and spiritual traditions. He began his martial arts career in Ohio as a teenager in the 1960s. In 1985, he was elected to the prestigious Black Belt Hall of Fame, honoring him for his years of pioneering work in introducing the legendary Japanese ninja martial arts to the Western world. He was awarded the extremely rare honor of ju-dan 10th degree senior master license in the Togakure Ryu ninja martial arts in 1993, and in 1997, he founded the martial art of To-Shin Do. Stephen K. Hayes has been featured in publications ranging from Black Belt to Playboy to Inside Kung-Fu to Tricycle Buddhist Review. His biography is listed in the international edition of Who's Who. He is the author of twenty books which translate the timeless knowledge of the East into pragmatic lessons for contemporary Western life. His books have sold well over a million copies, and many of his volumes have been published in a variety of different foreign languages around the world. A 1971 graduate of Miami University of Oxford, Ohio, Stephen K. Hayes majored in theater. He later returned to Miami University for post-graduate study of comparative religions in the early 1990s, focusing on translation of Japanese Tendai exoteric and esoteric liturgical texts. In 1991, Stephen K. Hayes went through formal ordination to become a teacher in the 1,200-year-old Vajrayana esoteric meditation tradition. From the mid-1990s, he has worked to translate texts for the practice of Vajrakilaya esoteric meditations in the Sakya and Drikung Kagyu traditions. During the years he lived in Japan, he used his professional acting skills in a broad variety of Japanese television and film projects. Most notable to American audiences was his role alongside Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune in the NBC samurai epic Shogun. He has taught and demonstrated effective self-protection skills to military and law-enforcement groups including the U.S. Air Force Academy, the FBI Academy, and members of Britain's elite SAS. He has worked on special projects under contract with the United States Defense Intelligence Agency. He regularly served in the 1990s as personal protection escort and security advisor for Nobel Peace Prize laureate the Dalai Lama of Tibet.  He taught as Adjunct Professor in the Masters of Business Management program of the McGregor School of Antioch University, and serves on the University of Dayton Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Advisory Council, and the Union Institute & University Center for Clinical Mindfulness and Meditation. He is Chairman of the Board of SKH Quest Centers, a company dedicated to promoting the benefits of training for self-development. He spends much of the year traveling the world as a teacher, seminar leader, and lecturer.
