Dr. John W. Barnhill is DeWitt Wallace Senior Scholar at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he is also Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Professor of Medical Ethics. Translated into a dozen languages, Dr. Barnhill's seven psychiatric textbooks are clinically oriented and written for both clinicians and the lay public. He has served on the editorial board for books published by the American Psychiatric Association and on the editorial boards for two psychiatric journals. In addition to maintaining an outpatient psychiatric practice for over 25 years, Dr. Barnhill has worked with a wide variety of patients treated at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM) and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). He has been (or is) the psychiatric liaison for the kidney transplant team and the advanced heart failure service at NYP/WCM, a departmental vice chair, the chief of psychiatry at HSS, director of the house staff mental health program at NYP/WCM, the liaison for the lupus service at HSS, and liaison for the dermatology service at Rockefeller University Hospital. He has chaired the Weill Cornell faculty senate (the General Faculty Council). A long-time member of the NYP/WCM Ethics Committee, he is chair of the Ethics Committee at the Columbia University Center of Psychoanalytic Training and Research, where he is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He serves on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Rockefeller University. Dr. Barnhill has consulted, given lectures, and organized courses in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Japan. He has been especially active in working with psychiatrists in eastern Europe as part of the annual Salzburg Weill Cornell Psychiatry Symposium (Open Medical Institute) and in working with the Weill Bugando Medical College in Mwanza, Tanzania. He has served on the International Psychoanalytic Association's Committee to the United Nations and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
