Writer, editor and researcher John Garth is known worldwide for his ongoing work on Tolkien’s life and creativity, and was awarded the Tolkien Society’s Outstanding Contribution Award in 2017. His first book, Tolkien and the Great War, won the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award. His second and third, Tolkien at Exeter College and The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien (published in the UK by Frances Lincoln and in the US by Princeton University Press) were nominees. His books are in 15 languages so far. He continues to research and write about Tolkien’s creative life. John has also contributed chapters to the Blackwell Companion to J.R.R. Tolkien; the Bodleian Library exhibition book Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth; and The Great Tales Never End: Essays in Memory of Christopher Tolkien. He speaks and lectures about Tolkien internationally. After reading English at St Anne’s College, Oxford, John worked for many years for the London Evening Standard.
