A writer and scholar, Gustavo Pérez Firmat has published several books of poetry in English and Spanish: Sin lengua, deslenguado, Viejo Verde, Scar Tissue, Bilingual Blues, Scar Tissue, The Last Exile, and Equivocaciones. He is also the author of the memoirs Next Year in Cuba and Cincuenta lecciones de exilio y desexilio. His books of literary and cultural criticism include A Cuban in Mayberry, The Havana Habit, Tongue Ties, and The Cuban Condition. Newsweek included him among "100 Americans to watch for in the 21st century" and Hispanic Business Magazine selected him as one of the "100 most influential Hispanics" in the United States.
