Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira uiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira was born in São Paulo, in 1934. He is Emeritus Professor of Getúlio Vargas Foundation, where he teaches since 1962. His major influences come from Marx, Weber, Keynes, and from post-Second World War, development economics. His more significant theoretical contributions are on the rise of the technobureaucratic social class, on the theory on the transitions and consolidation of democracy, and the theory of public management reform; in economics, are on a revised model of growth and distribution and the respective stages of capitalist development, on the theory of inertial inflation, on the methodological critique of neoclassical economics. From the early 2000s, he is developing a new theoretical framework, New Developmentalism, which comprises a development macroeconomics focused in the five macroeconomic prices, particularly the exchange rate, and a political economy where developmentalism is the alternative form of economic and political organization of capitalism to economic liberalism. In the interpretation of Brazil, he has combined his analysis of its economic growth with the discussion of the corresponding historical class coalitions. The emergence of industrial entrepreneurs and the transition to democracy are themes in which he offered special contribution. From 1963 to 1982, while keeping his academic activities, he was vice-president of the Pão de Açúcar Group. From 1983 to 1999 he was in politics, having been Firnance Minister (1987) and Minister of Federal Administration and Reform of the State (1995-1998). Since July 1999 he is fully dedicated to academic life. Besides teaching at Getulio Vargas Foundation, he is the editor of the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy since 1981. In 2010 he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Buenos Aires; in 2012, the James Street Scholar 2012 from the Association for Evolutionary Economics – AFEE; and in 2015, the Juca Pato prize from the Brazilian Union of Writers.
