I'm an illustrator, author, arts-in-ed teacher, and mom. I grew up in New York's Hudson Valley, and studied art at the Art Students' League in NY, the School of Visual Arts, and SUNY Purchase. But mostly, I learned about art by visiting museums voraciously throughout my teens and twenties. Now I live in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. Living on the edge of a wilderness preserve, raising three children, and growing my own vegetables have all influenced my work as both fine artist and illustrator. I've published over thirty picture books, both fiction and non-fiction. I'm known for my multicultural books that go around the world: A RIDE ON MOTHER'S BACK, about how babies are carried in different cultures and what they learn; AROUND THE WORLD IN ONE SHABBAT, which follows the cycle of one Sabbath in families all over the globe; WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING, a fun flap book depicting a single moment in time all over the world and teaching about clocks and time zones; and JUST LIKE ME, CLIMBING A TREE, in which children climb trees in diverse lands to the rhyme and rhythm of a poem about a single child. For older children, these picture books have glossaries and backmatter that teach more about the trees climbed, the cultures shown, the traditions celebrated, or the time zones crossed – allowing your child to grow with the book and learn along the way. I'm also known for my unique concept books, such as TO & FRO, FAST & SLOW, about the world of opposites experienced by a child of divorce; and IN THE FIDDLE IS A SONG, with flaps that reveal the creative potential hidden in humans and nature alike. For other authors, I've illustrated tales from faraway times and places, such as HOW SNOWSHOE HARE RESCUED THE SUN, a Siberian tale retold by Emery Bernhard; NEVER SAY A MEAN WORD AGAIN, set a thousand years ago in medieval Spain, written by Jacqueline Jules; or THE DREIDEL THAT WOULDN'T SPIN, a toyshop tale from Prague a century ago, written by Martha Simpson. I'm honored to bring these timeless tales to life! My newest book is THE LIFE OF AN OLIVE, which I have both written and illustrated. The culmination of seven years of travel, research, writing, painting, and designing, this book is close to my heart. Set in the Galilee (northern Israel), the story follows the life of a 2000-year-old olive tree, and the history that unfolds in its valley throughout its lifespan. Learn about these amazing trees and how they've shaped human history! THE LIFE OF AN OLIVE is offered in an inexpensive paperback edition for classrooms. My website is dyaelbernhard.com, where more information, my picture book blog, and hundreds of paintings and drawings, may be found.
