Barbara M. Newman

Barbara Newman grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She received her B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, with a specialization in developmental psychology. Dr. Newman is a professor emeritus in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island. She has been a faculty member at Russell Sage College in Troy, New York, and at The Ohio State University where she served as department chair in Human Development and Family Science, and then as Associate Provost for faculty recruitment and development. Dr. Newman's current research focuses on the sense of belonging among college students with particular attention to students in minoritized groups She is a member of an inter-university research team investigating the development of a sense of purpose among college students with disabilities. Barbara and her husband Dr. Philip R. Newman have co-authored 13 books including the recently published 13th edition of "Development through life: A psychosocial approach" and numerous papers in the field of human development. In 2017, Dr. Newman was recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Lifetime Achievement.
