I am a woman, a surgeon, and a teacher of surgeons. I graduated from New York University College of Medicine in 1976 and completed my surgical residency there in 1981. I was one of the last physicians to train in the "old" Bellevue Hospital. At that time, very few women entered general surgery. I have spent my life in academic surgery, operating and teaching others the science and art of surgery. When I was appointed Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa in 1995, I was the second woman in the history of American Surgery to attain such a position. My textbooks all share the goal of teaching surgery in clear, lucid language. My short story collections, "A Few Small Moments" and "Beachcombings", are set in the world of academic surgery. My most recent books are on Medical Writing. I live in Iowa City with my husband.
