Announcing the publication of "THE BROOKLYN EXPERIENCE: The Ultimate Guide to Neighborhoods & Noshes, Culture & the Cutting Edge."
This is my 4th authoritative, fun guide to amazing Brooklyn. (For my former readers, this is 99% NEW material!)
This version covers a lot more history, connecting old and new Brooklyn. It takes you to dozens of neighborhoods, and includes snippets of interviews with five dozen movers and shakers--all with opinions! My first Brooklyn guide was a celebration of ethnic authenticity. This book details how the vibrant mix up of diverse cultures and creative economy has launched the unexpected, pretty extraordinary cultural, culinary and artistic come-back of the Big Apple's most beloved borough.
See a nice little video about Brooklyn (and me) on You Tube: https://youtu.be/NxOXc4jgFG0!
You'll find restaurant tips, fun things to do with kids, a list of festivals and freebies, and DIY walking tours for the indie traveler. And yes, you'll also hear from community activists working on housing, environmental issues and social justice--all part of the fabric of the borough.
Partial proceeds from the sale of this book have been shared with two local nonprofits, the Brooklyn Children's Museum and Groundswell.
"The Brooklyn Experience" was written for a range of readers: the first time visitor, Manhattanites exploring the city, Brooklynites who want to learn more about what's happening in Brooklyn, and armchair visitors--including the millions of Brooklyn expats who want to know how Brooklyn became the hottest micro-city in the nation!
As for the author, I've got a couple of degrees, a zig-zag career, a number of nonfiction books under my belt, and Brooklyn expert creds up the wazoo, with about 1000 articles about Brooklyn online and three former guidebooks to the borough. Probably my most popular Brooklyn article online? It's "How to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge!" Seriously.
Brooklyn keeps morphing. I've chronicled the Brooklyn's evolution over 20 years, including in the award-winning "Brooklyn: The Ultimate Guide to New York's Most Happening Borough," published by St. Martin's Press.(That Society of American Travel Writers award was accompanied by the comment, "a comprehensive guidebook to an underrated destination..." Ha! Underrated no more!)
My first book about Brooklyn, coauthored with my husband, was the first commercially published guide to Brooklyn for over a half-century, since the end of WWII.
Like lots of folks, I've seen neighborhoods get reborn, watched as the Brooklyn Bridge became a must-see for tourists across the world, and celebrated Brooklyn's re-emergence as a dynamic, diverse, dynamite place to visit, work, live, eat, and raise a family. Come, eat, bike, ride the subways and roller coasters, go to free festivals, meet, explore, enjoy.
