Andrew Martin grew up in Yorkshire (see his book, Yorkshire - There and Back) and drifted into writing after qualifying as a barrister. He is the award-winning author of about thirty books - both fiction and non-fiction, the latter usually historical crime. Some of his books are about trains, including his series of historical crime novels featuring the railwayman, Jim Stringer. The tenth in that series, Powder Smoke, was published in 2021.
His non-fiction railway books include Underground Overground, Night Trains, Seats of London and Metropolitain. His non-railway novels include Soot, The Winker and (written as AJ Martin) The Night in Venice, forthcoming from Weidenfeld in July 2024. He writes a Substack called Reading on Trains.
