Fred Turner

I'm a professor at Stanford University who writes mostly about media technology and cultural change. I'm especially interested in the ways that emerging media have transformed American life since World War II. I've written four books and a bushel full of essays. What connects them is my fascination with communities of belief. How is it that large groups of people who have never met face to face can nevertheless agree that the world works one way and not another? How is it that these beliefs can change as radically as they do from one lifetime to the next, or from one country to another?
