Roderick Stackelberg was born in Munich, Germany, in 1935 of an American mother and German father. The story of their meeting and marriage may be followed on his website www.roderickstackelberg.com. Rod came to the U.S. with his family in 1946. He attended high school in Connecticut, went to college at Harvard from 1952 to 1956, served in the U.S. army from 1958 to 1960, taught in Germany from 1962 to 1967, taught high school in Vermont from 1967 to 1969, and finally returned to graduate school in 1970, earning an MA at the University of Vermont in 1972 and a PhD in History at the University of Massachusetts in 1974. He taught at San Diego State University, the University of Oregon, and the University of South Dakota before joining the faculty at Gonzaga University in 1978. In 1997 he was named Powers Professor of the Humanities. He retired in 2004 as Professor Emeritus.
