David E. Scharff, M.D., is an internationally renowned psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and psychoanalytic psychotherapist for adults, children, families and couples. With Dr. Jill Scharff, he is the 2021 winner of the Mary Sigourney Award in Psychoanalysis, the most prestigious award in the field, for his teaching, writing and international teaching, and for expanding the range of psychoanalysis to China, Russia and other countries. Dr. Scharff is distinguished as the Co-Founder and Former Director of the International Psychotherapy Institute, which teaches an object relations approach to psychotherapy and psychoanalysis . He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at both Georgetown University and The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and is a Supervising Analyst of the International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training. Additionally, Dr. Scharff is Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in China,” and author and editor of more than 30 books and more than 100 articles. He is director of training programs in psychoanalytic couple and family therapy in Beijing and Moscow, and former Chair of the International Psychoanalytic Association’s Committee on Couple and Family Psychoanalysis. His private practice is in suburban Washington, DC. His most recent book is “Marriage and Family in Modern China.”
