Cathy Kaemmerlen grew up in Charlotte, N.C. where she created "shows" of all kinds for any audience available, usually her doting, ever positive parents. Her early years and career were as a dancer, dancing with the Charlotte Opera Ballet, then discovering the joy and freedom of "dirty feet dancing" (modern or contemporary dance.)
Her speaking voice was "silenced" for a number of years as she danced with various companies and formed her own with two other women, THE CONTEMPORARY DANCE ENSEMBLE. Instead of creating "shows," she created dances, receiving a choreographer's fellowship from the National Endowment and the S.C. Arts Commission.
Three children later and moves from coast to coast, enabled her to re-connect with children's literature (her undergraduate degree). Now she began to act out children's books and stories. Ever since, her speaking voice has not been silenced, although her dancing shoes are collecting dust.
For over thirty years now she has created storytelling "shows" and programs as an artist-in-the-schools through Young Audiences and other agencies. Fifteen years ago, she discovered her hidden love for history and began creating one-woman, herstorically base shows. Herein lies her niche and she has been immersed in this genre of performing ever since. You'll find over thirty shows in her repertory ranging from FOR EVERY RHYME THERE IS A REASON (cause and effect stories) to SUSAN B. ANTHONY: FAILURE IS IMPOSSIBLE to BULL RUN/MANASSAS.
Living in the Atlanta area, she became infatuated with America's Civil War and how women/civilians were affected, leading to her first book GENERAL SHERMAN AND THE GEORGIA BELLES. What better way to tell the history of Atlanta and connections between historical families than to recount stories of people buried in Atlanta's city cemetery, Historic Oakland Cemetery.This led to her second book, THE HISTORIC OAKLAND CEMETERY: SPEAKING STONES.
Why not write where her performing heart was based...for children. Her first foray into children's literature is JUST BUZZING AROUND with Itty Bitty Betty, she's a honey of a bee. Cathy will be buzzing around with bee stories and tales collected by Betty, who's a bit of a gossip.
