Kay Burke, PhD, an author and a consultant, has presented keynote addresses and workshops on standards-based assessment, Common Core State Standards, performance tasks, checklists, and rubrics at numerous district, state, national, and international conferences for more than 24 years. Before focusing on professional development, she worked in public education, serving as a secondary teacher, a department chair, a dean of students, a mentor, an administrator, a college instructor, and chief academic officer for a master's program. Dr. Burke was named DeKalb County Georgia Teacher of the Year and was a semifinalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year. She was also a STAR Teacher for Georgia and received an award for Excellence in Teaching at the White House. She received a Saint Xavier University (Illinois) certificate for her work as director of a field-based master's program. Dr. Burke has been featured as an expert commentator on seven online graduate courses. Dr. Burke has written and edited numerous books on standards-based teaching and learning, balanced assessment, formative assessment, classroom management, mentoring, and student portfolios. She is author of the best-selling books How to Assess Authentic Learning; What to Do With the Kid Who . . .: Developing Cooperation, Self-Discipline, and Responsibility in the Classroom; and From Standards to Rubrics in Six Steps: Tools for Assessing Student Learning, a finalist for the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award in Assessment in 2010. She is also coauthor of The Portfolio Connection: Student Work Linked to Standards. She earned certification in administration and supervision from the University of Georgia, a doctorate in communicative arts from Georgia State University, an educational specialist degree from Emory University, a master of education from the University of Central Florida, and a bachelor of arts from Florida Atlantic University.
