Peter Afflerbach is Professor of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research and teaching interests include individual differences and how they influence reading development, reading assessment, reading comprehension strategies, and the verbal reporting methodology. His recent books include Teaching Readers (Not Reading): Moving Beyond Skills and Strategies Reader-Focused Instruction, published by Guilford; Handbook of Individual Differences in Reading: Reader, Text, and Context (published by Routledge); Understanding and Using Reading Assessment, K-12 (published by ASCD); the Handbook of Reading Research, 4e (with Elizabeth Moje, P. David Pearson and Michael Kamil) and Handbook of Reading Research, 5e (with Elizabeth Moje, Pat Enciso and Noni Lesaux), published by Routledge. Peter serves on the 2025 Framework Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)-Reading, and on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Achievement Level Descriptors for NAEP. Peter is a Research Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and an elected member of the International Literacy Association's Reading Hall of Fame. He is a former K-12 reading teacher, and is a proud graduate of New York City Public Schools, and the University of Albany.
