John Freedman

John Freedman is the author or editor/translator of some fifteen books involving Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian drama and theater. He has translated over 150 plays into English from the original Russian and Ukrainian. The majority of these texts have been published or produced in the primary English-speaking countries - The United States, England, Canada, Australia and South Africa. In the 2010s he worked closely with Breaking String Theater in Austin, TX, and Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield, MA. His book "Provoking Theater: Kama Ginkas Directs" (2003) has been published in Romanian (2008) and Bulgarian (2023) translations. His play "Dancing, Not Dead" won the Internationalists Global Playwriting Contest in 2011. He lived in Moscow from 1988 to 2018, and was the theater critic for The Moscow Times, an English-language daily from 1992 to 2015. He is the co-founder and curator of the Insulted. Belarus Worldwide Reading Project (2020 to present), which gave rise to the book "Two Plays of Revolution" by Andrei Kureichik (forthcoming 2023), and the founder/curator of the Worldwide Ukrainian Play Readings (2022 to present), which gave rise to the book "A Dictionary of Emotions in a Time of War: 20 Short Works by Ukrainian Playwrights" (2022 & 2023, second edition).
