Larry E. Rivers is presently Distinguished Professor of History at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee. Prior to becoming Distinguished Professor of History at FAMU, Rivers served as Professor of History from 2013 to 2017 at Valdosta State University (VSU) in Valdosta, Georgia as well as the eighth President of The Fort Valley State University (FVSU) from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Rivers’s education and experiences had well prepared him for his various teaching and administrative positions. Having received a Bachelor of Science degree from FVSU, he went on to earn a Master’s degree at Villanova University, and two earned doctorate degrees, one in History and Curriculum development from Carnegie Mellon University, and the other in African and African American Cultural Studies from the University of London. Rivers served in both administrative and teaching capacities at Florida A&M University for over twenty-nine (29) years before assuming the presidency at FVSU. Rivers in the meantime had emerged as a respected author, historian, and scholar. He has authored or co-authored eight (8) books on various aspects of Southern History. His book Slavery in Florida: Territorial Days to Emancipation captured three national awards, and his Rebels and Runaways: Slave Resistance in 19th Century Florida received two history awards. He has subsequently co-authored or co-edited the following six (6) books: Mary Edwards Bryan: Her Early Life and Works; Varieties of Women’s Experiences: Southern Women in the Post-Civil War Century; For Great and Grand Purposes: The Beginnings of the AMEZ Church in Florida, 1865 to 1905; John Willis Menard: Lays in Summer Lands; Laborers in the Vineyard of the Lord: The Beginnings of the AME Church in Florida, 1865-1895; and The African American Experience. Rivers has also published over 60 scholarly articles and book reviews in professional refereed journals. Rivers is presently completing two (2) books entitled, The Medical Missionary Work of Dr. Louise Cecilia Fleming, 1862-1899 and Bishop Abraham Lincoln Grant: African American Leadership in the Era of Jim Crow with Dr. Canter Brown Jr. His chapter entitled Florida Governor Harrison Reed, 1868-1873 recently appeared in Governors of Florida by R. Boyd Murphree and Robert Taylor, published by the University Press of Florida in 2020. His teaching, research, writing, and community service have earned Rivers acclaim and recognition for excellence. Georgia Trend magazine named him in January 2008 among the “100 Most Influential Georgians.” Rivers is a member of numerous organizations. A few are the NAACP, The Tallahassee Chapter of the One Hundred Black Men, Sigma Pi Phi, the Boule, and The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Rivers is married to the former Betty Jean Hubbard of Dry Branch, Georgia. They have two sons, Larry Omar, an Associate Professor of History at the University of West Georgia, and Linje Eugene, an Attorney with the Law Firm of Knowles and Randolph in Tallahassee.
