Mark Mikolas attended the University of Toronto and has a B.A. from The New School. He taught photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the NYU Graduate School of Media Studies. He then transitioned to filmmaking, with a film studio in New York City producing independent, documentary, and commercial films. After his son, Devon, was born, he moved to the country in upstate New York, where he took up freelance writing. When his son graduated from high school, he and his wife Patti moved to Vermont, where he continued writing, editing and photographing. He has had a love of and interest in trees and natural subjects since his early days in the Boy Scouts. Much of his writing for publications has been on trees, such as articles on black walnut trees in Old Farmer's Almanac and Mother Earth News. He always hikes with a camera and has several projects in the works.
