Paul Hashagen has been fighting fires since 1976. In 2003 he retired from the FDNY after twenty-five years of service, with twenty of those years in Rescue Company 1 in Manhattan. He is a former chief of the Freeport Fire Department and is still an active member of Truck Company 1. Paul is the author of 8 books, he's written numerous feature articles, and lectures nationally on the history of the fire service. His column "Rekindles" appeared in Firehouse Magazine from 1995 until 20015. It covers major fires, spectacular rescues, various apparatus and interesting highlights of the unique company's history.
