Anthony Hood Chambers is a scholar and translator of Japanese literature, most notably of fiction by Tanizaki Jun’ichirō and *Tales of Moonlight and Rain*, by Ueda Akinari, for which he received the 2007 Japan-United States Friendship Commission Prize. He is also the translator of Tanizaki's *Naomi*, *The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi* and *Arrowroot*, and *The Reed Cutter* and *Captain Shigemoto's Mother*, even though Amazon doesn't credit him as the translator. He has also translated Hara Tamiki, Hirano Keiichirō, Kamo no Chōmei, Kanze Kojirō, Kineya Shōjirō, Minakami (Mizukami) Tsutomu, Mishima Yukio, Miyamoto Teru, Natsume Sōseki, Shibusawa Tatsuhiko, Tate Shirō, and Zeami. A Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, he has also taught at Wesleyan University, the Associated Kyoto Program, and the Kyoto Japan Center. His mentors at Pomona College, Stanford, the University of Michigan, and in Tokyo include Robert H. Brower, S. Y. Ch’en, Donald Richie, Edward G. Seidensticker, and Makoto Ueda. He lives in San Diego.
