Peter & Susan Hassall are authors of a number of books written for and by students of World Englishes including their well-known ESSC series output following implementation of the Extremely Short Story Competition [ESSC] held in the UAE, Japan and Lithuania. Having worked in Higher Education in the Middle East, South-East Asia and the Pacific Rim, Peter & Susan Hassall have been presented three English Speaking Union awards at Buckingham Palace by HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, President of the ESU.

Peter John Hassall, originator of the ESSC for users of World Englishes, has designed, edited and published a number of volumes of 50-word short stories in full-colour to help initiate an interest in creative language output by Emiratis from the United Arab Emirates. Recently Peter John Hassall has started designing, editing and publishing stories written with his wife Dr. Susan Hassall.

This series consists of stories from around the world which are written bilingually with carefully controlled vocabulary and grammar making them suitable for learners and users of both English and other languages. A variety of realistic and exciting themes encourage reading for pleasure.

Parallel series include Bilingual Readers and Translation Workbooks to encourage self-study, teaching/learning and translation to/from other languages. The Bilingual Readers support user preference being presented in 2 formats depending on the language that appears first in each paragraph. These Bilingual Readers also provide an expert translation solution for the complementary Translation Workbooks, which can themselves be used to stimulate written and/or oral translation.

To date the following titles have been published as Bilingual Readers and Translation Workbooks:

"The New Potter." Set in Bahrain (the Kingdom of Bahrain): The New Potter - Grandfather is becoming too old to make pots anymore. Who will take over his work? His grand-daughter Jamilah is the only person interested, but making pots is not a girl's work.

"Crocodile Beach." Set in Brunei (Negara Brunei Darussalam): Crocodile Beach - Ani is sure she can win the cross-country race. But she takes a wrong turn in the jungle, is attacked by a crocodile and imprisoned in its larder. Will she ever escape?

Bios of the translators now follow:

Chinese Translator: With over 15 years of experience of teaching university English writing in the USA and the UAE, Dr. Shuozhao Hou is currently the director of Upper Room Educational & Management Consulting FZE in the UAE, which provides consultation on language learning, language test preparation, and study-abroad application for colleges/universities in the USA as well as translation and conference interpretation service.

Korean Translator: Dr. Hyejeong Ahn is a lecturer in the Language and Communication Centre at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. She earned her PhD in Applied Linguistics at Monash University in Australia. Her research area focuses on Educational Linguistics, specialising in Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) and World Englishes. Korean Translator: Dr. Chonhak Kim is a visiting professor in the Writing Centre of the School of General Education at the University of Seoul in Korea. He completed his PhD in Korean Linguistics at the University of Seoul. His research area, in the field of syntax, focuses on 'the verb' and 'aspect' in Korean.

Japanese Translator: Yuko Takeshita is a professor of English and intercultural communication at Toyo Eiwa University, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. During her 30 plus years of experience of teaching, she has published various kinds of books for Japanese users/learners of English, and articles on Asian Englishes and intercultural communication. Some of these concern the Extremely Short Story Competition in Japan that she was responsible for, in cooperation with Peter Hassall.
