Brian Burrell's latest book is How the Brain Lost Its Mind, a collaboration with Dr. Allan Ropper. In it the two authors describe the current resurgence of syphilis, and how syphilis of the brain, though largely forgotten, sheds an important light on our understanding of mental illness and its relationship to brain disease. Brian Burrell is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he has taught for 25 years. The author of six books, he has appeared on the Today Show with Katie Couric, Booknotes with Brian Lamb, and NPR's Morning Edition with Steve Inskeep. He is a product of the Lexington (MA) public school system, has degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and UMass Amherst, and lives in Western Massachusetts. His research has taken him to brain collections around the world. His latest book is the third in a string of books about the human brain and its connection to the workings of the mind.
