As a former Supreme Court reporter for The Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones News Service, I've been at the nexus of the Court and the press, the two formidable institutions that are the subject of this book. At other times I've practiced law and taught media law to graduate students at Northwestern University's Medill School. I also enjoy writing about significant Chicago lawyers and U.S. Supreme Court cases for ChicagoHistoryJournal.com. I wrote an earlier book about Chicago politics, Up Against Daley, and served as an elected commissioner of Cook County, further sharpening my working view of the law in our daily lives. At bottom, that impact is the motivation for this book. Thanks to David Abrahamson of Medill for instigating it, and to Fred Graham, a formidable chronicler of the Supreme Court, for lending his wise voice to it. The book's website is www.supremecourtandthepress.com.
