I'm a writer inspired by the people, places and culture of the Midwest. In my memoir, GROWING UP COUNTRY: MEMORIES OF AN IOWA FARM GIRL, I share stories about growing up on a family farm in the middle of the United States, in the middle of the 20th Century, a way of farm life that is rapidly disappearing from the American landscape. GO AWAY HOME, my World War One-era novel, is a coming of age story that will resonate with anyone who’s confronted the conflict between dreams and reality and come to recognize that getting what you want often means giving up something else you want just as much. My second novel, SIMPLE TRUTH, is a contemporary story set in an Iowa meat packing plant. where the protagonist is forced to reckon with what she will risk to help someone else. In a return to non-fiction, my most recent book - STITCHED THROUGH TIME, THE STORY OF LIBBIE HAYLOCK'S QUILTS - shares the mystery of my grandmother's heirloom quilts, begun in the early 1900s and only brought to light decades after she died in 1972.
