Hiram Sanchez Martinez

Hiram Sánchez Martínez (1950, Yauco, Puerto Rico). He studied at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the School of Law of the University of Puerto Rico. He was a reporter and photographer of the weekly “La Hora”. He has participated in the literary creation workshops (short stories) of the writers René Marqués, Emilio Díaz Valcárcel and Emilio del Carril. Although he was in private practice early in his career, he has served mostly in public service. In the Executive Branch, he has been advisor to the Governor of Puerto Rico and advisor to the Secretary of Justice. In the Judicial Branch he has been Judge of the Superior Court, and Judge of the Court of Appeals of Puerto Rico. In the legal field, he is the author of the text “Derecho Procesal Apelativo” (Appellate Procedural Law), awarded the “2001 Legal Work of the Year Award” by the Bar Association of Puerto Rico. In the literary field, he is the author of “Cuesta de los Judíos número 8” (PEN Club of Puerto Rico National Award: Memoirs, 2008); “The husband of his lover and other short stories” (2009); “Cuentos inveraces para ser creídos” (2010); “Casi siempre fue abril” (2014) (winner of the Second Prize for “Best Drama Novel in Spanish” at the 2015 International Latino Book Awards); “La ciberimpostora” (2015); “Están los locos y los que se hacen” (2017); “Raymond Dalmau: From Harlem to Puerto Rico” (2018) (jointly with Raymond Dalmau Pérez); “Antonia, tu nombre es una historia” (2018) (Honorable Mention, PEN Club of Puerto Rico: Memories, 2020), (Second National Prize for Literature in the category “Research and Criticism”, of the Best Works of 2019 contest, of the Institute of Puerto Rican Literature); “I wanted to be like Charles” (2020); “A mi juicio” (2020), “Ató con cintas sus desnudos huesos” (2021) and “Hay dos cuerpos en la nevera y otros crímenes” (2022).
