Born and raised in the Detroit area when The Motor City was in its hey day. My father was a Ford Motor Company executive and my mother was a dedicated home-maker. We moved to Sao Paul, Brazil when I was 14 years old and I attended the Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo (The Graded School) for two years, when I came back to the US to attend the Howe Military Academy, where I graduated in 1972. I enlisted in the US Navy in January, 1973. I married my wife, Denise, in March of 1973 and we are still together, with four children, eight grand children and one great grandchild.
After four years in the US Navy, stationed in Yuma, Arizona, I worked at Ford Motor Company's Electrical and Electronics Division in Dearborn, MI. It was while at Ford that I set my career path on the course of business systems and process improvement, ultimately leading to writing Balanced Scorecard Strategy for Dummies.
I left Ford in 1985 and moved to San Diego to work with General Dynamics, where I furthered my education in continual improvement as a TQM Manager for the Lean Six Sigma Operations Task Force, leading the transformation of the Missiles and Electronics Group and the Convair Division. This is where I met my life-long friend and coauthor of our book, Rick Buchman.
After leaving General Dynamics in 1992, I started my own consulting business, PSI Associates, which I still run and manage to this day. I met Peter Economy in 2000, which. like Rick, is a valued and beloved friend and kindred spirit.
In 2005, I moved to the Tyler, Texas area, where I live today. My passion has been and continues to be helping people in the workplace, enabling their work improvement efforts and helping them to find more joy in their work through improved systems and processes. By doing so, I help companies to improve their key process indicators and metrics and their bottom line results.
I have had the distinct privilege and honor to work with many major companies and their people around the world, including AT&T, Boeing, Hyundai, Kia Motors, GlaxoSmithKline, Ricoh, Boston Scientific, and Samsung, to name a few. I have also had the distinct honor of teaching IT Project Management to the US Army and having my Managing Process Improvement Projects course taught through major universities, including UC Berkeley, Pepperdine, George Mason, Michigan State and San Diego State. I serve on the Cal State Fullerton Lean Six Sigma Advisory Board.
My certifications include Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Project Manager, Program Manager, Project Quality Manager, Scrum Master, Scrum Product Owner, and Scrum Team Member.
I am still active in my consulting business and always looking to engage and help people and their companies to improve their strategic execution and integration with their business systems and processes. My driving force is the people that do the work, day in and day out, and making their lives better by helping them to find joy in their work through better systems and processes.
