Chris P. Miller

Dr. Chris P. Miller (PhD, JD) was born and grew up in Waukegan Illinois where he attended the public schools, graduating from Waukegan West High School in 1982. Chris continued his education first at the community College of Lake County, Southern Illinois University and finally Northern Illinois University where he received his BS degree (Chemistry) in 1987. Chris went on to graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned his PhD degree (1993) in organic chemistry. The joint work between Chris and his research advisor Professor Peter Wipf led to the publication of several scientific papers, many of them highly cited by other researchers. After attaining his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, Chris went directly to work in the pharmaceutical industry as a medicinal chemist at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer). While at Wyeth, Chris led the chemistry side of numerous drug discovery efforts including several of Wyeth's highly successful nuclear receptor teams, which collectively introduced several compounds into human clinical trials. His research accomplishments include the invention of the drug bazedoxifene, a selective estrogen currently on the market in Europe and pending application in the United States both as drug monotherpay for osteoporosis as well as a combination product for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. A bazedoxifene patent listing Chris as co-inventor was the winner of a 2006 Thomas Elva Edison patent award in the emerging therapies categories. As a researcher and author, Chris has dozens of patents and scientific publications to his name. Chris has not only been fascinated with the science of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery throughout his career but very early on was infected with an interest in patent law, prompting him to attend the evening division at Temple University School of Law (Philadelphia, Pa) where he graduated magna cum laude in 2001. Chris's experience as both a very active researcher in the pharmaceutical arena coupled with his greater than seven years as a patent attorney provide him with an unique perspective for reaching out to fellow chemists who might find themselve struggling with concepts related to chemical patent law. The lack of a chemistry patent law text that included ample, specific and current exemplification prompted Chris to co-author this book with fellow researcher Dr. Mark Evans. Together, they have provided an approachable but yet detailed examination of US chemical patent law. Currently, Chris lives in Hingham, Ma and works as VP chemistry and patent counsel at a Cambridge Ma - based biotech company. Chris has been happily married for over twenty years and lives with wife (Lori), two children (Kyle and Skye), two dogs (Trixie and Buster) and two fish (Zippy and Big Red).
