I am a cultural historian, interested in the interplay of writing, society, and environment in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. I have written or edited nine books, many of which explore slavery and its abolition in the Atlantic world. Others are concerned with the environment and animal studies in the same historical period. My most recent book is The Unnatural Trade: Slavery, Abolition, and Environmental Writing, 1650-1807, published in 2024. I am currently working on a new project to explore the lives and works of clerical naturalists in the British Isles and Empire from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. I am currently Professor of Literature, Culture, and History at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England. I live in Northumberland where I enjoy walking and birding in our fabulous coast and uplands. Find out more about me and my work on my website - just search online for "Brycchan" and the site will come right up.
