I write nonfiction: history told through the stories of the people who lived it. You see, what we think of as history today affected real people, real families. While the actions and accomplishments of well-known men and women often drive history as we know it, I'm more interested in the ordinary folks who dealt with the consequences or benefits of those actions. There's more drama, I believe, in the story of a cash-strapped young farm couple trying to raise a family and find work during hard times than in the story of the economics of the Great Depression. And that's what you'll find in my books: stories of real people trying to navigate life day to day under the shadow of big events. I do a lot of research to find those people and bring them to life. I began my career as a newswriter, and I've written for The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, San Antonio Express-News and Associated Press. I currently live in Dallas, where I write books, contribute articles to history magazines, journals and websites, and speak to groups on historical subjects.
