Jason Baehr is Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He works at the intersection of virtue theory and epistemology. He has published widely on topics like intellectual virtue, wisdom, humility, and knowledge. From 2012-2015, he was director of the Intellectual Virtues & Education Project at LMU, which was sponsored by a grant of over $1 million from the John Templeton Foundation. As part of this project, he co-founded the Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach, a middle school systematically designed around helping students develop intellectual virtues like curiosity, open-mindedness, and intellectual courage in the context of academic teaching and learning.
Jason’s 2011 book The Inquiring Mind (Oxford University Press) explores the nature of intellectual virtues and their role in the philosophical study of knowledge. It is written mainly for philosophers and other academics interested in virtue epistemology.
In 2016, Jason edited Intellectual Virtues and Education: New Essays in Applied Virtue Epistemology (Routledge). This book is a collection of essays written by philosophers, psychologists, and educational theorists about intellectual virtues and their role in educational theory and practice.
Jason’s most recent book, Deep in Thought: A Practical Guide to Teaching for Intellectual Virtues (Harvard Education Press, 2021), draws on his expertise in virtue epistemology, his role in founding the Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach, and his ongoing professional development work with primary, secondary, and post-secondary teachers. It provides an introduction to intellectual virtues and explores the “principles, postures, and practices” involved with teaching for intellectual virtues. Written for educators at all levels, this book was recognized by the Greater Good Science Center as one its "Favorite Books for Educators in 2022."
Jason is currently at work on a second monograph in theoretical virtue epistemology, titled Inquiry & Agency: A Theory of Intellectual Virtues and Vices (under contract with Oxford University Press).
