Fittingly, I'm a scientific generalist with advanced degrees in both engineering and psychology. I'm also an experienced naturalist with a good background in biology. (Even so, the extensive research for this book posed quite a challenge!) The idea is to go interdisciplinary, integrating information across different areas to try to make sense of everything. Many years ago, John Brunner wrote about this activity in his scifi classic Stand on Zanzibar, calling his hero a "synthesist." I thought when I read it how cool that job sounded. I was right . . .
